《iPad3の発売日は3/8（木）予約受付開始、3/16（金）発売に決定！》
サンフランシスコの中心部の「Yerba Buena Garden」と呼ばれる一角で開催されたGDC(Game Developers Conference)においてAppleの新製品の発表があった。この会場（美術館「Yerba Buena Center for the Arts」 ）は、故スティーブ・ジョブズが2011年に行った「iPad2発表」と同じ会場だ。
大方の予想通り「iPad3」改め「新しいiPad」が3/8（木）に予約受付開始で、3/16（金）より世界同時発売される。
また、これまで色々とネット上で噂や画像が流出してきた「iPad3」
のデザインや技術仕様だが、その噂が実際に実現したのかを下記にまとめてみた。
また、Apple新製品発表では、かねてより噂にあった『AppleTV
』 同時発売される。AppleTVは1080pに対応で99ドルで3/16（金）に同時発売。
《iPadの正式名称は「新しいiPad（The New iPad）」》
これは誰も予測できませんでしたね。大方の予想では「iPad3」「iPadHD」「iPad2S」でしたが、正式名称が「The New iPad（新しいiPad）」になるとは・・・でも通常は「iPad」

以上の結果となり、事前に流れていた噂は大体が当っていた。ディスプレイは高解像度化されたRetinaディスプレイを採用し、解像度が2048*1536で精細度が264ppiとなりともにiPad2の解像度1024*768、精細度132ppiより倍増した。CPUは期待を外したがデュアルコアA5Xクアッドコアグラフィックスを搭載し、グラフィック性能のみ4コア（クアッドコア）となる。高速通信4G LTEにも対応してきた。これでますます「ドコモXi（クロッシィ）版iPad」が期待される。2012年6月に予定しているドコモ社長交代で方針転換はあるのか？新しいiPadの外見はiPad2と殆ど変わらない。厚さが8.8mmから9.4mmへと変更となり0.6mm厚くなった。そして、重量もiPad2の602gから新しいiPadの652gとなり50g増加した。なお、価格はiPad2から据え置きで、iPad2は16GBモデルのみとなり、価格を下げてエントリーモデルとして併売する。
なお、高速通信4GLTEに対応してきましたが、日本ではLTEに対応しているキャリアはdocomoだけ（KDDIは対応予定）で、ドコモからは「新しいiPad」の発売はありません。そのため、「WiFi+4G LTE」に対応しても日本では高速通信LTEが機能しない・使えないことになりますが、海外のLTE対応キャリアのSIMカードを使うことで4Gを使えます。その代わり、「HSPA+/DC-HSDPA」にも対応しているので、ソフトバンクの「UltraSpped」が使えることになります。そのため、日本では4GLTEモデルはソフトバンクの独占販売・専売ということになります。なお、米国ではAT＆TとVerizonがLTEによるサービスを提供。3Gにも対応。iPadとしては初めてテザリングに対応しているが、テザリングは「日本を含む一部の国々では利用できない」のが残念だ。そして、iPad2は16GBモデルのみ値下がりしてWiFiモデルが34,800円、WiFi+3Gモデルが45,800円になる。
